The North Otago Rugby Football Union (NORFU) is thrilled to announce the appointment of Kieran Hallett as Technical Advisor for the upcoming season. A highly experienced coach and former professional player, Hallett brings a wealth of expertise to the team.
Hallett has been a key figure in Leinster Rugby’s coaching setup, currently serving as an Elite Player Development Officer. He was recently with the senior Leinster men’s team in South Africa, playing a pivotal role in their victory last weekend. Hallett’s coaching experience spans national and professional rugby, including roles with Irish Rugby’s elite development pathways, the Ireland Women’s team during the 2020 Six Nations, and the Ireland Under-19 Men’s squad. His international experience includes a stint with the Melbourne Rebels in 2023, alongside coaching roles at Exeter Chiefs, Plymouth Albion, and Ulster Rugby’s Age- Grade programs, which have further honed his expertise in player development.
Reflecting on his appointment, Hallett said:
“I’m delighted to be joining North Otago Rugby and supporting the coaching team. Having lived in Oamaru and played here in 2005, I was excited when Sene approached me about this opportunity. North Otago played a key role in my early career, and the chance to give back to the union is incredibly exciting. I look forward to working with the coaching group and helping us achieve success this season.”
NORFU is excited to welcome Hallett, whose deep connection to North Otago and proven track record in player development and high-performance coaching will be invaluable. His appointment underpins the union’s commitment to fostering excellence and providing opportunities for players and coaches alike.
CEO Sene Naoupu expressed her enthusiasm for Hallett’s appointment:
“I’ve seen firsthand how Kieran’s coaching has an immediate impact, especially in defensive systems. His technical knowledge and ability to analyse and refine structures bring real clarity to teams, making processes more effective and strengthening overall performance. It’s significant to have him on board, and he’ll be invaluable support for our coaching team and players. I’m also grateful for the support of Leinster and Irish Rugby’s CEOs, who recognise the value of global coaching connections. Their backing reflects the true spirit of rugby, supporting performance, developing global coaching capability, sharing knowledge, and strengthening communities from grassroots to the professional game.”
Kieran’s role with North Otago Rugby is structured to support the team without interfering with his commitments to Leinster Rugby and the IRFU. His expertise and experience will enhance North Otago Rugby while ensuring his existing responsibilities remain unaffected, benefiting all parties involved.
With Hallett’s added guidance to Luke Herden’s squad, North Otago Rugby is poised for a strong and promising season ahead. The Highlanders will also announce their advisory support for North Otago Rugby's Heartland coaching team in due course, further strengthening the region's rugby development.
